App of the Week: The Prisoner of Carrot Castle

Teaching kids the importance of eating quality foods is something I am quite passionate about.  One of the reasons I decided to get my masters in nutrition was because I wanted to know how best to take care of myself and my family as I truy believe that healthy foods are key to good health.  So when I came across Chris Pedersen’s app The Prisoner of Carrot Castle – I was sold as it teaches kids how to eat healthy in a fun way. Ms. Pedersen does a great job teaching little ones the importance of healthy foods set in a magical world and Kate Jeong has done a wonderful job at illustrating this gorgeous and fun story.

I had a chance to speak to Chris Pedersen about her company, Purple Carrot Books, and her fun storybook app The Prisoner of Carrot Castle.

Tell us how Purple Carrot Books came about?
While The Prisoner of Carrot Castle was in development as an app, I decided to brand myself as a publisher of kids’ book apps. Since I am all about having an impact on people’s health, especially children’s with The Veggie Chronicles series, I thought a vegetable name would be fun and attention-grabbing. I settled on Purple Carrot Books because the first cultivated carrots were purple, a color everyone loves, and they’re making a comeback in grocery stores.

What has been the most rewarding part of creating these stories?
I love seeing the look on kids’ faces as they see, touch and hear the story. I have five grand-nephews, ranging from 3 to 6-years-old, who played a key role in testing the app during development. I’ve also read the book app to many classrooms from kindergarten to third grade–one class even asked me back a second time. They’ve all loved to read and interact with The Prisoner of Carrot Castle.

What new ventures do you have on the horizon?
The next book app in The Veggie Chronicles series is The Slave of Peas Pyramid. Aiden finds himself a slave in ancient Egypt working for a horrible taskmaster to the Pharaoh. We also have Blondilocks & The Three Bears, an expanded telling of the classic story of Goldilocks. You’ll be surprised how this one ends. Also a chapter book titled How I Survived Grade School ~ The Bully. Sign up for our e-newsletter at purplecarrotbooks.com so you can keep up on new releases.
