This week Cyndie Sebourn of Sascyn Publishing wrote a great post about the importance of offering Apps With Curriculum for the educational and home schooling market.  Ms. Sebourn has put together a Reading Activity for both Penelope and Gerry the Giraffe that are aligned with the Common Core Standards.  I am so happy to be working with her and be able to provide  parents with an app that is fun to read and that can be used for educational purposes.

 Apps with Curriculum in Education

Common Core State Standards are public education’s “essential” learning requirements for grades K-12.  These essentials are simply the basics that educators must teach. Gifted students will far exceed the “standards.”  Special needs students will need modifications to achieve the standards.  Standards are not the evil monsters of education, lurking in each district to destroy achievement and limit creativity; they just set a common standard for educators to cover core information.  We needed that.

The Importance of Common Core State Standards

If teachers across the nation were not aligned with the standards, there would be a disparity from state-to- state, district-to-district, and even from one classroom to another.  This has created a problem with basic learning information especially when students change states or districts.  CCSS provides a level playing field for all students.

I am in awe of the possibilities for educating students with apps.  Absolutely in awe! Twenty-six years ago, I began my career as a high school English teacher with a chalkboard, a filing cabinet, and one of those old mimeograph copiers that left purple ink all over my hands.  Only the veteran teachers remember the purple ink machine!

Apps With Curriculum

Apps in the classroom – what an awesome opportunity!  I soon realized, however, that apps alone in the classroom are not enough; educators – overloaded with students, paper work, and in-services – need app developers to design curriculum that accompanies these apps.  With apps in education, there is an immediate possibility for an app to be more than a thirty-minute source of entertainment that may have some educational value.

If I were still teaching, and if I were trying to decide between two apps that I could volume purchase for my iPad cart, and one of those apps offered custom-designed activities that involved technology, that provided student-friendly objectives, that aligned with Common Core State Standards, that used upper levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy, and most of all, that made learning exciting and memorable…well, I think my point is made.  I am certain that any teacher would purchase the app that provided curriculum.

As an educational consultant, I create curriculum for app developers and place my trademarked Seal of Approval on each lesson plan that I align with the standards.  The curriculum is often cross curricular and can provide hours of edutainment for the classroom.

Education is my passion.  Apps with standards-aligned curriculum are my focus.  There is nothing better!

Author Bio:

I am a National Board Certified Teacher, owner of Sascyn Publishing, Inc., and I live in Hot Springs Village, AR.  “Smarty Britches: Nouns” is my iPad app that not only teaches nouns through narrative and games but also provides a full set of CCSS aligned curriculum.  In addition to my app’s curriculum, I have also created CCSS aligned curriculum for Melissa Northway’s “Penelope the Purple Pirate” and “Gerry the Giraffe.”  Melissa is a cheerleader for Apps with Curriculum, believing that it will make a difference.

Thank you Cyndie!  Here is a sample of the Reading Activity for Gerry the Giraffe HD that was just released this week in iTunes!
