In the Spotlight with Author Natasha Wing

This week we are talking with best-selling author Natasha Wing whose books are #2, #3 and #4 on the Children’s Books Best-Sellers list!  How wonderful is that to not only have one but three books in the Top 10.  Only Dr. Seuss beat her out of the top slot!  You have probably seen and read her books that include The Night Before Kindergarten, The Night Before Preschool and The Night Before First Grade – all wonderful books that help ease little ones transition into a new school year.

Natasha sold her first manuscript, Hippity Hop, Frog on Top, in 1992. and has since, released over twenty picture books.  She is Picture Book Expert for the Children’s Book Insider and offers wonderful advice for new and established children’s book writers.  This is what she had to say about her creative process and what a typical day is like in her world.

Tell us how you came to writing children’s books?
I was in advertising and wanted to do something more creative. I always loved children’s books, and I was inspired by The Polar Express to try writing for kids versus writing ad copy aimed at adults.

What is your typical workday look like?
It’s pretty sporadic right now because I started another company making bike seat covers, but I find writing in the mornings is my best time for creativity. But if I’m intently working on a project, I write anytime I have a slot of time open and can focus.

Do you have a favorite book or character that you created?
I love Pearl from Pearl vs. the Tooth Fairy because she likes to collect things and is no nonsense. I also like the monster from Go to Bed, Monster! because he’s naive and rascally.

Best moment for you that made all the hard work worth it?
Any time I can sell a manuscript makes all the work worth it. That means my story or vision is that much closer to becoming a reality!

Thank you Ms. Wing for sharing your story with us!  We look forward to reading many more of your wonderful stories.
