Book of the Week: The Hippo, the Rhino, the Elephant and Me

The Hippo, the Rhino, the Elephant and Me

Ink Robin is one of my favorite eBook publishers around!  Their stories are so rich with great characters, wonderful illustrations and quite funny.  They have recently launched The Hippo, the Rhino, the Elephant and Me which is an interactive story set in rhyme about a little girl.  She has three rather large friends (a hippo, a rhino and an elephant) and the story takes us along for a journey in the day in the life of these four friends over the course of a week.   It’s illustrated by a British artist (Lisa Hunt) and narrated by Julie Hill who also narrated their first app, Will & Kate.

I love the little girl with her two missing front teeth and pigtails.  Julie Hill does a great job with the narration and the illustrations by Lisa Hunt are fantastic.  My six year old and I had a great time time uncovering her friends while they played hide and seek in her house.  The elephant thought it would be fun to hide behind the lamp and the hippo hid under the rug.  The animations are simple and sweet.  When you touch the hippo attempting to hide under the rug he tells us “Shhh,” as in don’t give him away.  Each day of the week they like to do different activities.  On Monday they like to play music and pretend they are a band.  This page was a big hit with my daughter – especially because when you touch the animals musical instruments (which include a broom stick, a set of pots and pans, and a tennis racket) you are able to “play” that instrument.  And they all sound pretty cool!

Tuesday is arts and crafts day which is a fun day of drawing and painting.  When you touch the picture on the refridgerator it takes you to an empty page of crayons and erasers.  You are able to create any masterpiece you want!  And when you are finished you touch the x in the left corner and it takes you back to the page where the four friends are creating – along with your picture that is now hanging on the fridge.  These simple, yet quaint additions really make for a fun eBook.  There are many surprises like this found throughout the story.  Like when you keep touching the screen lots of little doodles come up on the screen – there is even one of a pirate fighting a fire-breathing dragon!

I don’t want to give too much of the story away – but just wait until you see what fun they have on Wednesday.  Let’s just suffice that it is quite fun and they play pretend.  You remember those days as a kid when you dressed up and played make-believe games… All the animations are quite clever such as the light switch that when turned on –  turns the dark room into a room filled with the four friends dressed up in make believe.

One of the themes you will find in all of Ink Robin’s eBooks is humor.  I found their Picadilly’s Circus to be quite funny and The Hippo, the Rhino, the Elephant and Me will also get some laughs out of you and your kids! The interactive components are wonderful – like when they are all in the bathtub and you get to pop the bubbles from the bubble bath.  Such fun! You won’t be disappointed with this wonderful new eBook by Ink Robin!
