New Uses for Old Books

Back in the day when I had a little more time on my hands (pre-kid), I use to visit estate sales and antique stores and loved to pick up old books.  Though I am in the app and eBook world – I still love to open a new or old book!  Though some old books are beyond repair they can still be used in crafts.  Below are some fun crafts you can do with the kids or give out as gifts to friends, teachers or family members who share your love of books. Enjoy!

 Art Project For Kids:

I love this idea from Art Project For Kids!  Use old books and paint some pictures using watercolors.  Would make a wonderful gift for Mother’s Day!  Read more at Art Projects For Kids.

Handmade Shadow Boxes:

Can you say love at first sight?!  I LOVE this idea from Sweet Paul Mag that showcases a 17 year old girl’s creation!  This is actually not as hard to do as it looks.  She used images found in old books for the artwork and painted the back of the tins she recycled. A tutorial can be found on Sweet Paul Mag.

DIY Scrapbook:

What a fabulous idea from Coco A Daisy!  She uses an old book to make scrapbooks about her life.  You could do this for each member of the family – each one has their own book and you could journal their adventures for the year – so you have one book per year to showcase.  You can read more about how she created this here.

Book Pages Get a New Life:

This is a fun idea from Mint Design Blog.  She uses pages from an old book and sewed a cute little envelope out of them.  To read how to make these go here.

Boxes Get a New Life:

Fun idea from Trash 2 Treasure!  She used oatmeal containers and covered them with pages from an old book.  These would make a great way to store odds and ends or craft materials.  To read how to make your own go here.

An Apple A Day:

This would make the perfect Teacher’s Gift!  She used an old book and a green marker pen to create this fun idea.  If you prefer red apples – just use a red pen!  Image found on Pinterest.

Perfect container for rose petals:

This would be a great idea to use at a wedding or anniversary party.  Fill it with confetti or rose petals!  Read more at Confetti Day Dreams.

A Perfect Bookmark:

Use pages from an old children’s book to make these fun bookmarks.  Would make a great party favor!  Image found on Pinterest.

 Décor Ideas:

What a nice addition to any room in the house.  For a child’s room you could spell out their name and for the rest of the house you can use the family initial.  Image found on Pinterest.

Easy Craft:

This would make a nice gift for any book-loving friend or teacher!  To read how to make your own go to Better Homes and Garden.

Superhero Comic Book Letters:

Fun idea from cherished bliss!  This would be a great addition to any superhero-loving kid’s room!  To read how to make your own go to Cherished Bliss.
