Trolley games, sing-alongs, and more! PBS KIDS announced this week a brand new app from the popular show DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD, called Daniel Tiger’s Grr-ific Feelings.  We are big fans of Daniel Tiger’s Neighboorhood and watched it quite a bit when my daughter was in preschool.

Daniel Tiger’s Grr-ific Feelings is geared towards kids ages 2-5 and is available on iPad. The app is designed to empower kids to identify and express their wide and complex range of emotions. The four socio-emotional activities in the app offer kids a variety of interactive ways to accomplish this.

Kids get to choose which emotion they are feeling at the moment and pick from the different faces.  Daniel Tiger makes suggestions on how to pose showing this expression. The ability to express how one feels is so important for getting across their emotions.  I know kids can get frustrated if they aren’t able to clearly express their thoughts or feelings.  Many times I have to dig deeper to find out what is really bothering my daughter.  Like the time she went to the nurses office complaining of a stomach ache.  The nurse ended up calling me and percussed the conversation saying she didn’t have a fever.  I ended up picking her up from school and later found out that she was really upset because some of her classmates had said she wasn’t a good soccer player.  And since she is obsessed with soccer at the moment this really upset her.  Luckily, I was able to find out the reason why she had a stomach ache (anxiety-related I’m sure) and talk about how kids will just say things and not really mean them.  This app helps little ones start learning what each emotion means and how best to express them.

Included in the app are over a dozen games.  Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood really covers all types of feelings.  Each mini-game offers a chance to learn about emotions and feelings – but set in a fun game – so they are learning while having fun with Daniel Tiger.

And if your kids like to sing, there are over 18 of your favorite Daniel Tiger songs – each song is fully animated to help keep them entertained while singing along.  The ability to express our thoughts and emotions is really a lifelong skill.  I am sure you have met adults who could use some reminders on how best to express what they feel!  Instead of blowing off the handle!  I like that Daniel Tiger’s app helps teach them it is okay to express what they feel as opposed to holding things in.  When they are little it is important to encourage this emotional expression!

And good news!  We have two codes to hand out for Daniel Tiger’s Grr-ific Feelings which is currently in the Apple store Top New Apps!  Good luck!
