Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom 50th Anniversary Giveaway

mutualofomaha.2013

This year marks Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom 50th Anniversary!  I just loved watching zoologist and Wild Kingdom host Marlin Perkins with his chimpanzee sidekick W.K. (Wild Kingdom) and his adventures with wildlife.  Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, which premiered on Jan. 6, 1963, took viewers to the far corners of the world and studied wild animals in their natural habitats.  Wild Kingdom viewers witnessed exciting stories and learned about wildlife and conservation as hosts Marlin Perkins, Jim Fowler and Peter Gros faced the challenges of life in the wild.  My brother and I really looked forward to watching Marlin Perkins and I really believe the shows planted a seed in me for a lifelong love for nature and wildlife. Wild Kingdom was a television pioneer and its reach has extended well beyond TV as programs that include Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom Kids’ … [Read more...]

Book of the Week: W.A.R.P Book 1: The Reluctant Assassin Review & Giveaway

WARPbook.securedownload

Many of you might know that I am a big fan of good Middle-Grade (MG) and Young Adult (YA) books.  In fact, on our trips to the bookstore you can usually find me in the pre-teen and teen section.  I pay no heed to my husband's raised eye-brows when I head off into that direction at the bookstore.  My argument is that good MG and YA books have fun characters, a good storyline and usually entail some adventure-taking.  And I am all about adventures!  When I was asked to read and review best-selling author Eoin Coffer's latest book W.A.R.P Book 1: The Reluctant Assassin I knew I was in for a fun ride.  I really enjoyed reading Colfer's Artemis Fowl series which some say are like Die Hard with fairies. Early this month Disney-Hyperion, an imprint of Disney Publishing Worldwide, released WARP Book 1: The Reluctant Assassin with a first printing of 750,000.   Eoin Colfer will help … [Read more...]

Let’s Celebrate Giraffe’s Giveaway!

April 2013 121

Did you know that Gerry the Giraffe was one of first stories I wrote after my daughter was born?  I was inspired to write about a giraffe because I do just love them so - from their gorgeous faces and eyes to their gentle demeanor. I had my writer's group help me with the story while I met with a couple illustrators to see about collaborating together on the book.  This was prior to the release of Penelope the Purple Pirate but I was working on both stories at the same time. I met one young woman who had just released her first book and she drew some pictures for me but they just didn't seem like the Gerry I had in my mind.  It wasn't until I saw a giraffe in the Land of Nod children's catalogue that I found what I thought Gerry should look like!  I remember just sitting at my kitchen table and said out loud "that is Gerry!".  I ended up contacting the artist, … [Read more...]

Book of the Week: President Adam’s Alligator And Other White House Pets

PresidentAdamsAlligator_cover

Cheryl Shaw Barnes and Peter Barnes, the creative force behind Woodrow, the White House Mouse have recently launched a new children's book called President Adams' Alligator and Other White House Pets. The book is written for students at a 3rd grade reading level, and is a fun resource for learning about our presidents while appealing to children’s love of animals.  My daughter and I enjoyed reading about the various Presidents and the pets they had while in office.  For example, did you know President John Quincy Adams had a pet alligator? He kept it in a bathtub in the East Room of the White House. But President Adams wasn't the only commander-in-chief with an unusual pet. Along with a collection of dogs, cats, horses and birds, presidents and their families also had pet snakes, raccoons, bears, cows, mice, and more. Meet Thomas Jefferson’s mockingbird, who ate … [Read more...]

Disney Pixar UP: My Name is Dug Review and Giveaway

Disney.Dug.1

Disney Pixar's movie UP was one of my favorite movies the year it came out.  I loved the whole story and Ellie reminded me a bit of my adventurous daughter - with the crazy red hair and all!  And what isn't to like about Dug, the silly dog who wants to help his master any way possible.  Dug reminds me of our dog as he is a tad goofy like him! So it was with some excitement to hear that Disney Pixar released a fun app called UP: My Name Is Dug.  The story was written by Kiki Thorpe and illustrated by Ronnie del Carmen.  I like that the illustrations are hand-drawn and you can see the similarity with the movie but it is done in such a way that you feel you are reading a real picture book that is not filled with too many distracting animations.  We start off with Dug sitting down looking at you wagging his tail and sticking his tongue out in eager anticipation of what iss to … [Read more...]
