PBS Kids Launches Super Vision That Makes The Most of Screen Time

PBS KIDS launched a new revolutionary app designed specifically for parents that will give them the “super power” to engage with their kids in the digital medium as never before: PBS KIDS Super Vision.  Some of the PBS Kids shows we have enjoyed over the year include Sesame Street, Word Girl and Dinosaur Train to name just a few.  We do love Wild Kratts and it is fun for me as I usually am learning right along with my daughter about sea and animal life.  Lately, my daughter has been requesting the iPad before bedtime as opposed to watching a show for a few minutes to wind down before bed.  I have a problem with this because we tend to let her play on it longer than I would like and would prefer more educational programming than Minecraft games which is what she is obsessed with at the moment.    But now, with the release of PBS Kids Super Vision, I am able to put … [Read more...]

Book of the Week :: The Chicken Problem

ChickenProblem.1vBdTDH9hL__SX260_

This past May I had a chance to attend the PBS annual meeting in Miami, Florida and meet with some of the amazing creative crew who are helping to bring such quality TV programming to our kids.  My daughter grew up watching Sesame Street, Wonder Pets!, and many other educational programs.   I was so excited to meet Jennifer Oxley, the creator of Wonder Pets! and Billy Aronson who created the soon-to-be released PBS Kids PEG+CAT television series.  Through engaging stories and physical comedy, PEG + CAT inspires preschool children to see math as exciting, accessible, and fun. The show teaches measurement, shapes and patterns, and a wide range of fundamental pre-math skills, as established by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics. For many families, school got out this past week and many parents (especially moms) might be thinking about ways they plan to keep their children busy and minds active.  Studies have shown that children score lower on reading and writing tests at the end of the summer than from the end of the school year.  According to a study from Improve Reading Skills.com research shows: ~ Students who read over the summer do better in school in the fall. ~ Students who do not read over the summer demonstrate academic loss in fall. ~ 8 out of 10 studies indicate students who read for fun outperformed those who did not. ~ Students read more when they can choose their own books. ~ Reading 5 books over the summer can prevent academic loss. ~ Summer reading loss is cumulative.  By the end of 6th grade, children who do not read over the summer are two years behind other children.   PBS Kids … [Read more...]
